The Instrument of Surrender was a legal agreement signed between India, the Provisional Government of Bangladesh, and Pakistan to bring an end to the Bangladesh Liberation War and the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. As per the terms of the agreement, Pakistan surrendered its Armed Forces Eastern Command, paving the way for the establishment of the People's Republic of Bangladesh in the territory of East Pakistan. The document was signed by India's Jagjit Singh Aurora and Pakistan's A. A. K. Niazi, formalizing the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers to India – the largest surrender of personnel since World War II. It is worth noting that despite the agreement, Pakistan did not officially acknowledge Bangladeshi sovereignty until February 1974.
